Human existence can be understood through two complementary cycles. Together, they explain both what remains constant in us and what changes from one life experience to another.
Cycle 1 — The Cycle of Possibility -What We Always Are
At the deepest level, we are Spirit–Souls, and we remain Spirit–Souls.
This cycle refers to the permanent essence of the human being. It exists beyond time, culture, and physical form. According to the teachings of Daskalos (Stylianos Atteshlis), this essence is anchored in the Permanent Atom—the immortal spiritual nucleus that preserves identity, consciousness, and accumulated experience across lifetimes.
Key ideas of the Cycle of Possibility:
- Human nature is continuous and universal
- Consciousness and self-awareness are inherent potentials
- Creativity, moral discernment, and inner growth remain always possible
- Being human is not temporary—it is an enduring state of possibility
This cycle answers the question: What am I, beyond circumstances?
Cycle 2—The Cycle of Probability-How Life Unfolds
The cycle of probability describes how the Spirit–Soul enters the world and experiences life.
Through reincarnation, the Spirit–Soul expresses itself under specific conditions: a particular family, culture, historical moment, and physical environment. These conditions differ from one lifetime to another and shape the way human potential is lived.
To interact with the world, the Spirit–Soul forms three temporary bodies:
- Mental (Noetical) Body
Enables understanding, meaning, reflection, and conscious intention. - Emotional (Psychic) Body
Hosts emotions, desires, attachments, and reactive patterns that require awareness and refinement. - Physical (Material) Body
Allows perception, action, movement, and interaction with the material environment.
Supporting these bodies is the etheric double, which acts as an energetic bridge. It translates inner states into biological expression and records experiences during incarnation.
These bodies change from one life to the next, while the Spirit–Soul itself remains.
This cycle answers the question:
Under what conditions do I live this life?
How the Two Cycles Work Together
Human life emerges from the interaction of both cycles:
- The cycle of possibility provides continuity, identity, and potential
- The cycle of probability provides diversity, context, and experience
One cycle speaks of Being.
The other speaks of Becoming.
Neither alone is sufficient to explain human existence.
