Three Worlds of Existence

The Three Worlds of Existence—spaces of consciousness and becoming

There are three great Worlds of Existence through which the human soul travels: the Material World, the Psychic Worlds, and the Noetic Worlds. These are not separate but coexist and interpenetrate, just as our material, psychic, and noetic bodies are simultaneously present and active. Each world offers a specific environment of experience in which we express our thoughts, emotions, and intentions, thus constructing our inner and outer reality.

The Material World is the densest, composed of visible matter and subject to the laws of space and time. Here, we perceive reality through our senses, within the limits of the three dimensions. Life and death, light and darkness, and attraction and repulsion are all part of this world of constant change and duality. But this world is only the visible tip of a much vaster reality.

The Psychic World (also known as the astral plane) is a subtle replica of the material world, but much richer and more varied. The Psychic World, composed of psychic substance, is an emotional realm where desires, feelings, and emotional impulses manifest with heightened intensity. The law of duality is attraction and repulsion, and the being’s emotional state shapes the environment. Experiences are much deeper, and each emotion has a specific form, color, and vibration. Every night, when we sleep, we unconsciously retreat into this world; and at death, we will consciously find ourselves in it, with the same attitudes and interests we had in physical life.

The Noetic World is the world of thoughts, ideas, concepts, and causes. It is the space where archetypes and laws are formed, which are later reflected in the psychic and material planes. The 49 noetic sub-planes represent levels of increasingly higher vibration, culminating in planes where duality disappears and the soul enters states of unity, bliss, and expanded consciousness. In these spheres, time and space no longer have meaning in the familiar form—everything is present in the Eternal Now.

All three Worlds of Existence are structures of the Divine Mind in different degrees of vibration. The essential teaching of esotericism states, “Matter is a solidified form of mind.” Just as water can exist as ice, liquid, or vapor, so existence manifests itself in the three worlds as increasingly subtle forms of the same spiritual reality. A common substance acts between the worlds: the ether, which interconnects them and allows the transfer of consciousness from one plane to another.

What distinguishes these worlds is not space, but place—a specific state of vibration and consciousness. Just as radios pick up different frequencies, we can learn, through spiritual practice, to adjust our inner frequency and consciously access the psychic and noetic worlds. We all visit them in our sleep, but few of us remember, because the physical brain does not clearly retain the memory. However, these worlds are just as real—or even more real—than the physical world, and our experiences there profoundly shape our being.

The three Worlds of Existence are workshops” of consciousness. Here we conditionally build our inner “heaven” or “hell,” depending on the thoughts and emotions we emit. Through awareness, purification, and inner harmonization, we can learn to live in peace and light in all three worlds, opening within ourselves the gates to the eternal Reality from which they originate.
